The diary

  1. Steel armature being built on a Universal Rocks rockwork site
The rock exists in steel long before it exists in stone.
    01Phase 1

    Setting out and steelwork

Façade frames are set out against the finished building shell, with tolerances checked so nothing fouls doors, gutters or technical access.

  2. Shotcrete being sprayed over armature to form themed rockwork
Shotcrete is sprayed and shaped in the same movement.
    02Phase 2

    Shotcrete

Our nozzlemen spray the shell in continuous passes, following the modelled surfaces. Thickness, reinforcement and drainage are controlled as the shape grows.

  3. Universal Rocks sculptor carving wet shotcrete into rock texture
Texture is cut by hand, against the clock of the setting concrete.
    03Phase 3

    Carving, wet

Ornament, mouldings and sculpture are modelled by hand, then repeated across bays without ever becoming a visible copy.

  4. Themed façades integrated into hand-carved rockwork
Buildings grow out of the rock, not in front of it.
    04Phase 4

    Façades and details

Themed buildings, timber, plaster and ironwork are built into the same surface, so the architecture and the rock read as one set rather than as decor placed against a backdrop.

  5. Water feature integrated into Universal Rocks themed rockwork
Water is tested full-scale before a single coat of paint.
    05Phase 5

    Water, planting and integration

Planting pockets and drainage are integrated behind the façades where visitors never see them.

  6. Hand-painted finished rockwork ready for handover
The last layer is the one that decides whether it looks real.
    06Phase 6

    Painting and handover

Everything is hand-painted from the shadows outward — mineral washes, weathering, soot and lichen — then the site is cleaned, snagged and walked through with the client before opening.
